Obituary for John H. Heidel Jr.

John Henry Heidel, Jr, baptized into the hope of Christ’s resurrection, Monday, August 28, 2023 at The Gables in St. Louis, Missouri at the age of 74 years, 1 month, and 24 days.

John was born on July 4, 1949 in St. Charles, Missouri to the late John Henry Heidel, Sr. and Rose Heidel (nee Altepeter).

John is survived by his sister, Betty Vitale; nephew, Michael (Jamie) Vitale; great-niece Madelyn Vitale; and special cousin, Jerry (Marcia) Altepeter.

John was also a beloved cousin and friend to many.

John is a proud veteran of the United States Marine Corps where he served in the Vietnam war. He was also a very accomplished boxer in the St. Louis Area. He won multiple fights in his 10+ year boxing career, including becoming the golden glove champion. He would go on to be inducted into the Boxing Hall of Fame in St. Louis.

John retired from Local Ironworker Union 396 after a 25 year career. His proudest moment while working as an ironworker was coming to the aid of a coworker that fell 40+ feet. Due to his quick response and rendering of CPR, he saved his co-worker's life. Because of his heroics, John was awarded ‘Lifesaver of the Year’ in 1988.

After his boxing and working career, John became very involved with his community. He served as councilman and mayor for the city of St. John in north county St. Louis. Family, friends, and residents of his community will always remember John as being a “good guy”. He will be missed by many.

To help with the advancement of modern medicine, John’s wishes were to be donated to Saint Louis University Medical School.

A Memorial Mass will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, September 16, 2023 at Blessed Teresa of Calcutta, 150 North Elizabeth Avenue, St. Louis, Missouri 63135. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until time of mass.
